In 1998, with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Hilarion, the Holy Dormition Sisterhood was established in St. Marys, Sydney, by Hieromonk Kosmas (Vasilopoulos) of the Orthodox Monastery of the Archangel Michael. Although originally intended to become a monastic community, the sisterhood found its calling as a lay sisterhood, and gradually took upon itself the publishing work initiated by Father Kosmas. To this day, the sisterhood continues its publishing and missionary activities under the pastoral guidance of Father Kosmas, distributing approximately fifty booklets on the lives of the saints and various other topics. For ordering details please see the 2012-13 Catalogue available here.
In 2007, with the commencement of the talks given by Father Kosmas, the sisterhood established a book kiosk. The kiosk, located at the parish of Saint George Russian Orthodox Church in Carlton, Sydney, operates only on the days of Father Kosmas’ bimonthly talks. This kiosk stocks a wide range of traditional Orthodox literature and liturgical books in English published in the U.S. and Greece. The kiosk also offers icons, bookmarks, CDs, DVDs, beeswax candles, and other religious items.
Another way in which the sisterhood ministers is by chanting in English at the services that Father Kosmas performs before his talks, using the Byzantine melodies. These services are recorded and are included on many of Father Kosmas’ talks on CD.
The sisterhood is also involved in the enormous and difficult work of recording, editing, and the actual production and distribution of these talks.
