St. Stephen's Parish is so named because the name Launceston in ancient Cornish Gaelic (Llanstephen) means St. Stephen's place.

Fr. Michael can be reached at the Monastery during work hours (when Fr. Barry may not be available) on (03) 6224 0871.

St. Petroc Monastery in Tasmania has launched the mission of St. Stephen's Orthodox Parish in Launceston as from Sunday the 12/25th of October, 1998.

Fr. Barry Jefferies is in charge of the mission, and has procured the use of the large chapel standing in the grounds of Cosgrove Park old people's Home in Waveney Street, South Launceston.

Fr. Barry holds a weekday position in the Civil Service counselling and assisting welfare recipients, as well as holding the rank of Squadron Leader as a Chaplain in the Royal Australian Air Force. He is also Orthodox Chaplain to the Port of Launceston authority. Every week, he does youth work with Launceston members of the Air Training Corps. All of which gives him many missionary opportunities. Now with the regular services at such a visible Chapel, it is the beginning of a more regular Orthodox presense in Launceston and the north of the island generally. It is anticipated that some laity in other northern centres may seek more regular activities now.

The first Sunday (12/25th October 1998) saw Fr. Michael from St. Petroc Monastery serve Matins and the Liturgy as St. Stephen's, together with Fr. Barry and assisted by Sub Deacon Peter Ball from St. Petroc's. Those attending the Liturgy met together afterwards as the Launceston Novatel to discuss the future.
